Racial Comments must be treated with caution
Only a few countries developing new stories are also sensitive one that Ike Muoneke, Dakota Wesleyan University basketball players who was involved in a dispute outside a bar Mitchell earlier this month.
The family of the Muoneke, talented rotation of forces, which averaged nine points and six rebounds and helped Wesleyan game to another on the national stage of the tournament, said he was the victim of a hate crime, precisely here in Mitchell. It’s brought a sudden light on the city, and that most people here would prefer to leave.
Here’s what we know. Muoneke was involved in a fight and had his face swollen to prove, television shows photos and reports. We also know that two people, Gary and Kyle Bussmus were involved and were the attack, but not with hatred a crime. Muoneke was minor drinking.
We know the Bussmuses are Muoneke is white and black.
We know the Bussmuses Mitchell and Muoneke is not.
We know at least one racial slur was expressed during the fighting, according to the police report.
But we do not know what for some is that it is in fact a hate crime or racial motivation, despite requests from his family, it was. No witnesses were willing to talk about The Daily Republic, and the two parties in the case - which Bussmuses and Muoneke - Interviews rejected.
Muoneke sister, Lenea, was ready to talk to Ike’s mission and the incentive helped coverage with an e-mail to the media the day after the incident. In an e-mail, specially designated as a “race crime.
Within 10 days since the incident, we published three reports, and all were careful consideration to all parties concerned. The first simply describes the event, and the rights of Muoneke sister, he is motivated by race. The second was a follow-up to the room, calls the police, when new information still surface.
And Wednesday, we published a piece on crimes motivated by hate and crime in general in South Dakota, recalling that the first version of hate crimes of the state law - 22-19B-1 — given that four convictions, since it was adopted in Year 1993. Make your own decisions on statistics. It shows that juries are not to be ready to transfer people motivated by hate crime or alleged crime of State and lawyers are reluctant to cargo in the State, or that crimes motivated by hate crimes and not are not really as that in South Dakota.
Of course, this is not, as some television channels have painted the image. The ABC affiliate in Muoneke’s native Houston, Texas, reported that Muoneke, “he says received a lesson in non crimes motivated by hate and crime. But the thing worse, the police in South Dakota from now, do not see it that way.
The best is editorializing hazardous sensation in the worst.
Ike Muoneke appears to be a good guy. Over 20 years, he’sa Junior to Dakota Wesleyan and we sincerely hope he will return. His skills on the basketball, with its potential, are remarkable. Look at his Slam Dunk against the Black Hills State, which is on youtube.com, simply by typing the text in its name.
I see he’sa good basketball player, but otherwise I do not know him. I do not know who Bussmuses.
But if Muoneke was the victim of a hate crime - motivated simply by the color of his skin - is uncertain. The police report does not confirm you, witnesses are not really discussed before, and Bussmuses and Muoneke themselves are not talking here.
It is important to note that the allegations about these serious should not be something the mouth of family members, of course, prejudice or people who were simply not there. If nothing else than a bar fight, it can most public and spoke melee in the history of this city. With the wounds of interested parties, there is a Shiner Mitchell.
